Asylum Review

I had heard wonderful things about this book and I was actually impressed with Asylum from the very outset. It is a gloomy, creepy and dramatic book about a young man who is in a renovated mental hospital and finds that after mysterious circumstances that his dorm has developed a life of its own. Dan Crawford is a typical teen who spends too much time involved in his surveys of science and history, but jumps at the opportunity to experience college life at the prestigious New Hampshire College prep program for the summer. He finds that the school was just what he was looking for and now commences to form acquaintances with fellow students, Abby and Jordan. One night, they decide to investigate the abandoned basement of their dorm that used to be Brookline’s main office and maintains case files of the asylum’s infamous residents. Later on, their midnight excursion, strange things begins to occur with no logical explanation and Dan finds that some mysteries should have remained locked away in Brookline’s abandoned rooms.

Madeleine Roux’s Asylum is a haunting novel that provides a thrilling mystery and creepy locales that will keep you up at night. The pictures that are laced throughout the novel are a pure addition to the report and will realize the reader feel as though they are there with Dan and had me jumping at every noise that I found out. I adore the whole premise of vengeful spirits luring back their heirs to a place that has gone mad. This story holds a similar plot. I enjoyed every bit of piecing together the cryptic clues of the staff and the coincidence of clues left for others to watch.

Since this is a thrilling read, there isn’t much romance, but it did take a good flirtation feel that gives the book that right amount of serenity. There are creepy moments, then two characters get real and get to know each other, smiling. I enjoyed that. The friendships formed have more than what the reader understands. I enjoy understanding the story and watching it unfold secret by secret before my eyes.

This is a big level of mystery and mayhem. Loads of scary tales of the previous building, ordered by the townspeople, give this story dimension. The images add a neat effect to visualizing the universe that is being built for the lecturer. Ultimately an intriguing record that you cannot put down, I’m looking forward to reading more from Ms. Roux but it will be a spell before I sleep without the light on.
