The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennet falls under the category of historical fiction. We are not going to lie, at first we were a little skeptical about this one. Despite it being a Newyork Times bestseller and having a stellar rating on Goodreads, this one did not strike us this much. But, as soon we dived into the story, it turned out to be an unputdownable journey through history along with some bezzaz of drama.
Extremely compelling, beautifully written will be the words we will use, to sum up this unforgettable book. The Vanishing Half has unforgettable characters, complex familial ties, long-lost sisters, tragedy, and romance. Brit Bennett very intricately ties up complex familial drama within the lines of history and carefully balances the personal and historical sides of the story.
The Vanishing Half is an intergenerational examination of identity, and what it’s like to grow up in a body you’ve been conditioned to feel ashamed of. It’s a poignant family story that doesn’t shy away from the intersections of race, class, and gender—all while capturing the reader’s heart and mind in a way only Brit Bennett can do. We urge you all to give a chance to this beautiful read.
